In 1902 Teddy Roosevelt built this structure as a coat room for the public when entering the white house grounds. It was not attached to the actual white house.

Note that is was an open air structure with two rooms, one on each side mainly used as a coat room and storage .



Then in 1942 Franklin Roosevelt knocked down the coat room and entrance and created the east wing annex, again as an entrance and with offices for the employees associated with public tours. But the main reason he built it was to protect an underground bunker during world war two.

Note in red the walkway to the actual white house was added during this renovation, so people could walk indoors from the entrance to the actual white house

So when they say history is being destroyed could someone explain what history they are referring to?

The ballroom costs less and is being paid for by donations. Maybe people complaining about 400 million for a basketball court (and lawn sprinkler system) had substance to their complaints

Why do Republicans feel the need to keep defending this renovation? Its simple, Trump wanted some grand ballroom because its a symbol of stature and Trump's ego has to be constantly fed. Plus there wasn't currently a room big enough for Trump's head.

Then he lied and said it wouldn't touch the east wing, which I guess is technically true because he tore it down. Hard to touch something that isn't there.

Then he said it would cost $200M. Oops, meant $300M. Sounds like a Trump casino project. At this rate, Apple will be charging another $299 for the next iPhone to cover their portion of the cost overruns.

Not too worry its all being paid by private donations. Its not like those companies and people would ever expect anything in return.

So, why does MAGA keep defending this project? Because even they know a load of bullshit that will fill a $300M ballroom when they see it.

Conflicted and nip I did look it up and the Obama project cost just under 400 million for a basketball court and lawn irrigation. It was a typical government contract that forced the taxpayers to pay 10 times more then the work should have cost. But I guess the democrats forget about the wasteful government spending.

George bush's administration submitted plans for a very much smaller project but like most governemnt contracts by the time the process was completed, the Obama administration added on to the original project, went over budget, had to get more funds approved and the result was another government boondogle.

One difference between President Trump and President Obama is that Trump cancels projects that waste money while Presidents like Obama overspent any project they authorize.

Congress does not approve the architure for a project. They appropriate funds to get a project done. Once the money is approved the people who spend the money can spend it any way they want to get oit done. In most governemnt projects there are so many add-ons to the funds that it rarely resembles what was originally approved, costs ten times the original amount and takes five times as long to complete.

Thank god President Trump is using zero public money and will get it done ahead of schedule.

Nip CNN reported it was going to cost 365 million back in 2010, it actually went over 400 million by the time the repairs and renovations were finished, ALL FINANCED BY TAXPAYER MONEY.

Yes, the original work was approved just before Obama was elected, but it was the Obama administration who approved the start of the work, which originally was estimated at less then 200 million, then the Obama white house added to the work and with cost overrides went above 400 million dollars.

Besides the CNN report (and other news outfits at the time), you can also go to the Government Accountability Office (GAO) and get the specific details.

I prefer the way President Trump is doing it, first its a project all presidents in the past 100 years said was needed AND it is not using public money. Another win for the USA
