For years I have been interested in owning a M-1 Garand, I just always had some other bang stick that interested me more, but as a NRA member, and a member of the Ohio Gun Collectors association I can purchase through the CMP, and have been perusing a M-1. I don't need a high grade and would actually prefer a shooter rather than just a safe Queen. I have always loved the 30-06, and the idea that I might get a gun built on an action that might have seen action is appealing from the historical stand point. I am thinking I need "the greatest battle implement ever devised" as stated by George S Patton. I'll have to start looking for a supply of surplus ball ammo. So many great weapons based on the 30-06 from the US military, the 1903 Springfield, the M-17 Enfield, the BAR, the 1919 machine gun, The M-1 Garand. The 30-06 is probably the most adaptable cartridge ever conceived, with light bullets it is a great long range varmint rifle and it can be loaded with up to a 300gr bullet for large game.
Well my friends, keep a round in the chamber when you carry, keep a gun close, make your enemy sacrifice his life for his cause.

M1A1, with a fully automatic lever on it. Mi is too heavy to lug around. Better work out first before buying a BAR. Just my humble opinion. I have owned and used all three.

I’ve purchased half a dozen M1’s from CMP and enjoy the rack grade 1.3 million SA made in 1942 just as much as the service grade 150k Winchester and expert grade post war H&R. All except the H&R have era wood and arsenal replacement barrels. Pickings are slim from CMP these days so buy what you can or perhaps buy two, rack grade and their Special grade that will have new wood and barrel. Most of the surplus ammo is gone so you’ll not find much available. Good luck with your purchase of “ the greatest battle implement ever”.

I saw a video from some guy from Canada who said they are on the banned list now and he either has to turn his in to be destroyed or bring it to a gunsmith and have it made inoperable.
If not he’s looking at 10 years.

forget what grade CMP called them but my M1 is built from parts, new stock and barrel other parts look good no pitting issues. Looks nice and shoots good. I've bought a lot of CMP 22s, 52, 40X, Kimber 82.

The CMP is the way to go. It’s a little bit of a hassle but worth it. I’ve bought 2 Garands from them. I’ve also bought full cans of ammo from them as well. Both of them are good shooters too. It’s pretty cool to own an 80 year old piece of American history.

I have a M1 Garand, it’s a heavy sumbitch, but it packs quite a punch.
