Great band. That's a tough question. Definitely a David Lee Roth fan, Sammy was good but diamond Dave rocks. Ain't talking about love, everybody wants some and the 1984 album was one of their best so jump, Panama and Hot for teacher

Thanks for reminding me who opened for them at a concert we went to, Peter Frampton. Sammy was the lead singer when we went.

1st concert I ever went to, 9/79 in Duluth Mn. My g/f was a huge fan, I was a John Denver fan but the came the week of her birthday so I got tickets for us, her b/f and his buddy..semi nosebleed area.
Concert was good and got my 1st contact high....back in my naive days, had no clue. LOL

Yes, a couple years later she went to a John Denver concert with me..... that was an excellent concert.

Ice cream man, Panama, Jamie’s Cryin, Hot for Teacher. Why Can't this be love, during the Hagar era.

The guy is a fantastic guitarist, however he is a azzhole. Back in the mid 80s. A good friend of mine worked for the place that made strings and later guitars for him. He was the main salesman calling people. Eddie came to town to make deals for supplies and got all upset when my friend didn't have hookers waiting for him. Also a very old friend of mine, I have known over 60 years owned a house in Beverly hills that he got from his father when he died. He sold it about 8 or 10 years ago. Eddie bought a home 3 houses down and was a neighbor for many years. He said he was not a good neighbor.

Panama during the DLR years
Dreams during the SH years

but as long as EVH was playing guitar, it didnt matter who was singing.

First album was dark, raw and original. Amazing achievement. VHII was similarly excellent. After that they seemed to "soften", perhaps to the benefit of broadening their fan base, but IMO, the "flavor" that made the first two compilations great was gone.

DLR or Haggar ??

By jarreth on Saturday, January 24, 2026 - 7:43 pm:

I remember a story from them in their heyday. David Lee Roth woke up from a drunk and drugged stupor one morning hurting all over. When he asked Eddie what happened Eddie said you said you could fly. David said why didn't you stop me. Eddie said hell I bet $50 bucks you could.

I prefer early VH with DLR over anything they did with Sammy Hagar.

Jump - on 1984 - was the beginning of the end of their appeal to me. That's when Eddie - arguably one of the best Rock guitarists of his era and all times - got enamored with synthesizers.

The song Jump was a big hit but also was the harbinger of what was to come - less guitar centric and hard rocking and more poppy synth.

For the record I think Sammy is a great guy. He had a show on a cable channel (AXS tv?) that was fun to watch. He collaborates with other rock artists and has fun with it. Do a search on youtube for his shows and other content if you like him.

I just did not enjoy their synth/pop/commercially driven stuff of that era.
