T'was christmas day at the workhouse,
the rain was snowing fast,
a barefooted urchin with clogs on,
came slowly whizzing past.
His big little face was happily sad
his tears were silver grey,
he'd no treacle to put on his puddin'
although it was christmas day.
His tears were falling upwards
and then quickly wiped aside
when all at once across the snow
he saw the workhouse warden stride.
with a kindly scowl, the warden said
"we're full up, in 'ere, you know"
and although we "aven't got a bed
we know you're out 'ere in the snow"
if you want treacle on yer Puddin',
hold it out, with out delay......
so the young lad held out his puddin'......................
and the warden took it away..................
and on THAT festive note......
