Gunnison Beach Update
| By taurus64 on Monday, July 6, 2020 - 1:22 pm: |
My wife and I finally got to Gunnison late last week.
The first lot had plenty of capacity when we finally got to it- @ 10:00 am - after a long delay getting into Gateway Park. Probably 60% empty.
We did not see anybody wearing masks, even around the rest rooms. We wore ours going in and out of them.
It was a weekday so not all lifeguard stands were manned. However, there were 2 food trucks there which seemed unusual for a weekday.
This year the beach is still shorter on the south end due to the birds nesting there. So the beach is a bit smaller than it was a few years back.
Good news - they extended those mats that run from the bathroom area onto the beach! They seem new, are very firm, and extend way farther onto the beach. We were happy for that.
Plenty of Rangers on foot - quietly - so if you bring alcohol be sure to have it in non-labeled containers.
Rangers were enforcing the rules on windscreens and tents/shelters. Follow the rules on that stuff.
The bad news:
So many a**holes on the highway into Gateway, clogging the left lane while waiting for someone to let them cut into the right lane for Sandy Hook.
If you are one of those people - go F yourself!
Social distancing - some folks still don't get it. We had plenty of space until late in the day when 3 guys set up way too close to us while we were napping.
There had been a couple to our right but a good distance away. They left while we were napping and those idiots came into the space but only a few feet away.
And no I am sure they didn't do it to get a better view of my wife, they were not interested in women.
Glass on the beach - despite the "take your trash with you" and "no alcohol" rules we found an empty Corona glass bottle in the sand while setting up our space.
Glass on any beach is so dangerous. Don't bring it; if you bring, take it out with you.

Thanks for the info. Looking to go out there next week. When you go on is there set areas as couples Nome go to the left or right. Is there one side that is more laid back then the other. Just looking to see where the best area to set up to relax. Plan on getting there early and don't want to set up in a center of a party area. We never been before and don't want a bad experience the first time.

Thank you for the up date, looking to go next week for the first time. Is there any area that is better to set up at? Say to the left or right, along the water or in back

I usually sit by the second lifeguard stand during the week by the waters edge depening on what the tides are. I usually set up a wall of sand around me from the water coming up and then kinda put my stuff behind me giving me plenty of room. I will never go there during the weekend.Way to many freaks and to many people. The place is rude on weekends and feels like your walking thru a city block you would never walk down at night. Just my opinion.

binj - yes, we've gone on the weekends only a couple times when the planets aligned and we had no kids to worry about it, and we regretted going.
too many freaks, people with no social graces acting like they could do whatever the hell they want.
p1H - did you go? If yes let us know how it went.
We are hoping to get back there on a weekday in another week or so. This never ending brutally hot weather is not optimal for going there due to the lack of shade IMHO and crowding.
But its addicting to go there, hard to keep away during our all too short summers.

binj - yeah we definitely prefer weekdays for those same reasons.
A couple times the planets aligned and we were able to go on a weekend, but ended up with bad experiences.
Too many freaks, people who can't handle their liquor or drugs, too much drama and stress.
Lots of idiots who think because its clothing optional, anything goes. They act like complete asses.
Ruins the good times for those around them, sadly.

Went there and found it to be very disappointing! A bunch of hood rats that go there just to gaze at your woman. They don't take off their clothes and walk around like they are in the Bronx! Not a place to take your female! Just my opinion!
