Hot Spots: New Jersey: Gunnison Beach Update
By taurus64 on Tuesday, June 14, 2022 - 1:26 pm:

My wife and I went to Gunnison one weekday last week.

It was so relaxing as it was on a weekday, we can't stand going on the weekends anymore.

Just know that the beach is as small as ever due to the turtle breeding ground, bird sanctuary areas too.

The nude area is as small as we've ever seen it. So if you're going, get there early otherwise it will be asses to elbows even all the way back to the dunes.

It's $20 per car now - IDK if it was $15 or $20 last year.

The food trucks by the restroom were not open, although parked there. The vending machines were working though.

Those awesome mats now reach nearly to the first lifeguard stand, thankfully. It's much less work to walk to the water now.

There were 2 lifeguards on only 1 stand. Water was cold so not a lot of swimmers though.

There are now signs telling folks to keep their music down but there were still a few who felt the rules don't apply to them.

Also, there were many people smoking cigarettes and pot. The wind was steady so sadly we got too much second hand smoke.

Both are illegal in the entire Park.

That selfish behavior is just rude, don't do it. If you need to smoke find an area that is not crowded or upwind of the people in your area.

We did not see a Ranger's truck driving around or guys on foot. We only saw a guy on a quad and he seemed to be moving stuff to the lifeguard shack, not enforcing rules.

Thanks for the update. I thought the state beaches were free this year as per Murphy. Was that the cost just to access the nude beach area or as you first enter the park?

Thanks for the update.

Beach being free is misleading, sandy hook charges you to park , not to go on the beach, technically. So, hopefully that answers your question.

Gateway National Park, which is all of Sandy Hook, is a National Park.

It is not a State park, not free.

You pay when you enter the park. After that you can go anywhere in the park.

there seemed to be much more ranger presence last year than this year. they patrolled on foot last year apparently looking for alcohol because we saw them approach a few people to look at what they were drinking. we only saw rangers on foot this year when there was a swan walking around on the beach a week or so ago. but we normally only go during the week - perhaps they are more present on the weekend.

the extended mat this year is AWESOME! we always hoped they would extend it....what a nice surprise!

a lot of the same cast of characters (the guy who feeds the birds, the horseshoe players who act like they own the place, and of course there's always "bathing suit Carol".

The crowd that shows up later in the day (if you've ever been there you know who I mean) seem to be the worst violators of the loud music rule.

Nice update, lehigh.

We will only go during the work week now as the last few times we went on the weekend we actually did not enjoy the overall experience.

Considering how much money they rake in from the Gunnison beach patrons, they should do a better job of posting and enforcing rules.

Social distancing is one of them - pandemic or not. It is not OK to set up too close to someone you don't know.

It's not OK to crank your music at whatever volume you feel like.

It's not OK to keep smoking - anything - just because the Rangers are not telling you not to do it.

It's really a shame that so many people feel that just because it's clothing optional, it's optional to act in a civilized manner.

We have gone there often and agree, the weekends are not pleasant. Everyone is smoking and on top of each other. We struggled when trying to leave and although we got there before 9:00 people show up early and putt up those sand screens that essentially claim state to an area bigger than they need and block access to the water. Will only go during the week

Still the best nude beach around,
Great people, great times, we don't go on the weekends either only during the week, and there has been a Ranger Shortage the last 2 seasons,
We enjoy it there, looking forward to this upcoming season.....
